"Seven Studies in Space and Time"For sound and video, by Ian Fredericks, Russell Emerson and Gordon Monro (1991)
Program note
Highly-animated sound sequences juxtapose the pristine characteristics of computer-generated sound against the dynamism of constantly-varying sound parameters. Sound flies around, above and through a glowing fractal nebula. The clear "perfection" of the "brain machine" takes another step towards becoming organic - towards the surreal concept of "mechanical life". The music was composed and realised on "Jessie", the mini-computer in the Sydney University Experimental Sound Studio. The software was the suite IANSMUSE, written by the composer. The source images for the video were two- and three-dimensional fractals, both random and deterministic. They included "fractal mountains" and "nebulas" or "star fogs". The images were generated by programs written by Gordon Monro on a Mac IIsi. The video was based on the fractal images, modified and animated by Russell Emerson. The animation was carried out by MacroMind Director on a Mac IIci and video equipment located in the Centre for Performance Studies, University of Sydney.
