Program note

Peer Pressure is a simulation of a process which causes large groups of fireflies to flash in synchrony. This composition simulates 200 fireflies. Initially they are all flashing at random, but slowly they start to come into synchrony. Can a few mavericks resist the relentless pressure of the group, once it forms?

The piece was realised on the composer's home computer, using a combination of C++, Python and Csound. The sound used to represent the flash of a firefly is derived from a cicada buzz.

Peer Pressure is dedicated to Warren Burt.

Note: The piece was revised in 2001: the source sound used was changed and other minor changes were made to increase the effect heard when a large number of "fireflies" flash at once.
