"Suite for the Organ of St John's, Neutral Bay" List of pieces "Guyuhmgan"

"The Devil has a Tail"

Duet for soprano and contralto with piano accompaniment, duration 1 min (1991)

Program note

A setting of the poem "No. 15 - The Devil" from Thomas Shapcott's Charms and Prophecies for a Tarot Pack.

The devil has a tail;
we have curvature of the spine.
The devil has a horn and

the devil has a tail;
we have very little to boast about,
almost nothing at all.

The devil hides in the number FIFTEEN,
and other numbers. We hide everywhere,
we have persistence and sticky fingers;
the devil has a tail.

This piece was written as a sort of coda to Old Tom's Numerical Prophecies, though they are for different forces.

Performances, etc

  • Composers' Concert, Old Darlington School, University of Sydney, 31 October 1991.
